Vampire Cupcakes

Thursday, October 30, 2008

Tomorrow is Hallowe'en and for me that means office potluck lunch! Last week I signed up with the best of intentions of making some fabulously decorated gourmet cupcakes, but of course, time got the best of me. Tonight, as of 8pm, I had no cupcakes, in fact not even all of the ingredients for the most basic of cupcakes, and really no idea what I was going to do.

I had resigned to the fact that these were going to be the simplest of cupcakes, and almost even just went and bought some, but then thanks to the power of the internet I found a super easy halloween themed cupcake idea and I couldn't resist - vampire bite cupcakes!

Mine are a bit sloppy since I was rushing so much, but these are the simplest Hallowe'en treats you could possibly make. I just baked up the cupcakes from a box, iced them with white icing from a tub, and bought one little squeeze bottle of red gel icing. I squeezed 2 drops of red icing on each cupcake and used a pointy knife to run through the red to create the dripping blood effect.

Voila! - Vampire Bitten Cupcakes!

Fun Bandanas in My Shop - Get your Moustache On!

Tuesday, October 28, 2008

If you know me, you know that one of my other passions in life is snowboarding! And the season is creeping up fast! (Yes, I may be one of the few people alive that say "Bring on the Snow!!") So, with that in mind, I have added a few new and different items to my shop.

Snowboarders often wear bandanas to cover their face. It keeps the wind and cold off the face and neck, without some long, loose scarf in the way. I also find it a little easier to breath through, and you don't get all the fuzz of a scarf in your mouth. So I figured, why not make some bandanas that are fun and a little quirky!

These bandanas are all hand painted by me, and are available now in my Etsy Shop!

Motivation Mondays - 6 Weeks with Elsie Flannigan!

Monday, October 27, 2008

It's Monday.

I'm so tired after a very busy weekend. I spent most of the day Saturday working on new stuff for my shop. (None of which is fully ready to go yet). And Sunday I was up bright and early to climb the CN Tower, in support of the United Way. All I wanted to do after was go home and sleep, but I couldn't. It's my boyfriends birthday today, so we celebrated yesterday with a huge buffet dinner, followed by going to see The Roots in concert with Gymclass Heros and Estelle. An excellent day, but I am sure feeling the effects of little sleep today!

So anyways, Monday's I often do a feature here on Inspired By Hand called Motivation Mondays, and I was sure feeling the need to dig deep today to find my own motivation! So I started out like I often do, surfing around to my favourite blogs, seeing what's new with the people who inspire me. I made my way to Elsie Flannigan's blog, and was soooooo excited when I saw her post from yesterday! Elsie announced her brand new Online Course would be available for sign ups today! So, for an hour this morning I stalked Elsie's blog waiting for the official information and sign-up form, and as promised at 10am CST the details were announced and I jumped on it and snagged myself a spot in her course!!

Here are the details as described on Elsie's Blog:

New Camera Straps in my Shop!

Thursday, October 23, 2008

This past weekend I was lucky enough to make it down to the Creativ Festival here in Toronto. A couple of my favourite fabric stores had booths, and lots of gorgeous fabrics on sale! I was lucky enough to pick up more of one of my most popular sellers, Michael Miller's Dandy Damask in Black and White, and I also snagged some in pink! I also picked up some of Amy Butler's Lime Martini fabric, which I have had my eye on for a while now!

Tonight I sat down and made new funky camera straps from the two fabrics. These are available now in my Etsy shop!

Photoshop Actions!

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

I love photoshop actions! They can make a mediocre photo really pop quite easily and quickly. Yesterday Smashing Magazine published and article called, "The Ultimate Collection Of Useful Photoshop Actions" and I had a chance to sit down and play with some of them!

I've taken one of my photos and used 5 different actions, all available for download below. Many of these actions come as part of a set with a whole bunch of variations.

New Items in My Shop!

Tuesday, October 14, 2008

I've listed 2 new items in my Etsy shop and I wanted to share them with you! The first is something new I am trying out; I designed these flat notecards that I think are perfect for writing out thank you notes or little love notes. They feature a robot character that I illustrated, and the saying "peace. love. robo." It makes for a fun and super cute, no-so-serious notecard!

The second new item in my shop is a new camera strap called "Emergency Broadcast". I gave it this name because it's bright, vibrant colours remind me of those stripes that used to come on the TV when the announcer would say "this is a test of the Emergency Broadcast Corporation...". Ok maybe it's just me... Anyways, I hope you like this new vibrant addition to my fun camera straps!

My Birch: Where dirty people clean up their act!

I recently was introduced to one of the best looking soap shops I've seen in a while! With fun names for her products like, "Clean your Kumquat", "UGLY Soap' It will scrub the Ugly off ya", and "Foamy top Latte Bar", who could resist checking out the delicious soaps at My Birch!

I had a chance to chat with Katie from My Birch, and ask her a bit about her soaps and her business. Katie really prides herself on her products and rightfully so! Katie thrives on making a perfectly balance bar of soap, with skin loving oils and milks; Fun, happy and interesting scents; And an amazing artistic flair. She is happy with the niche she has carved for herself, but believes there is always room to grow and push to be even more unique and ahead of the pack.

Katie has always been interested in girlie things like soap and beauty products. Never happy with the store bought soaps, she knew there was a place for her to bridge that gap. Katie says, "I've always been creative and self reliant. I was a slave to Google for weeks learning all I can about the vast world of soaping. I made my first batch and it was true love from then on out."

Of course, I had to ask Katie where she gets her inspiration. She explained that she's inspired by everything around her. Seeing all the leaves changing inspired her lively Pumpkin Spice bar, Dreaming of a Bahama vacation brought on my Beach Bar. She says, "I want soap to be not only moisturizing, but fun and artistic! With my scents, I use my nose to guide me. I never want my soaps to be too saturated. I want it to be a perfect balance to soothe your senses every morning, and not give you a headache! I love summery scents and upbeat notes, summer for all of us is the happiest time of year. I like to bring that feeling back to you every time you hop in the shower with one of my soaps."

So, if you want to wake up each morning and relive your beach vacation, or feel the warmth of sweater on a cool autumn day, or even the remember the playful memories Bazooka Bubble Gum brings back, jump over to Katie's shop, My Birch, and check out her lovely collection of soaps.

It's Thanksgiving Monday here in Canada, and festivities are winding down for me as I had a big family feast yesterday. With Thanksgiving winding down my mind starts to wander to the next Holiday of the year... Christmas!

In thinking of Christmas and Handmade goodies, I started wondering about gift wrapping and pretty packaging to make handmade gifts all that much more special and easy to give. Top 11 Mistakes I See New Bloggers Make

Saturday, October 11, 2008

I spent some time on some crafting forums this morning and I repeatedly saw threads popping up asking questions about blogging, how to get started, what to do, etc etc. I often see many of the same mistakes being made over and over again by new and even old bloggers, so I have compiled this list of common mistakes made by bloggers.

1. Displaying too many ads
When many people start blogging they think, “Cool, I can make some money off my blog with ads!”, and they load up their blog’s side bars with advertising space. There are a few problems with this thinking though:

  • Realistically, you need to build up your views before ads will benefit you.
  • Too many ad spaces actually lessens the value of each spot. If supply meets or exceeds demand, then everyone gets a spot and there is no incentive to pay a little more for a spot an advertiser really wants.
  • A lot of clutter ads can subtract for quality content and leave a bad taste in reader’s mouths. If a blog looks like the writer’s main reason for running a blog is to make money from ads it makes me question their content.
2. Displaying your RRS readers or “Blog Followers” too early
People like to do what other people are doing. It’s in our nature to be curious about something other people are lined up to see. If you post your subscriber number when it is too low, it can actually work against you by giving people the sense that your blog is boring and not worth following.

Focus on writing good quality content, and readers will come, and over time your subscriber list will grow. There is no set number for an impressive amount of subscribers, I think it all depends on your market and niche, I personally will be waiting at least until I have over 50 subscribers, many people would choose to wait until they have at least 100.

3. Promoting or Advertising your blog too soon
Spending time promoting your blog before you even have ten posts is not an effective use of your time. At the beginning spend your time focusing on quality content and refining your blog. This doesn’t mean you don’t want anyone seeing your blog, it just means don’t waste your time on advertising and promotion for a brand new blog, use it to grow and improve the blog.

4. Not updating frequently enough
Especially at the beginning, blogging nearly every day is very important. You need to keep your blog top of mind and the only way to do that is to give them new, fresh, exciting content almost every day, (if not a couple of times a day). Ramping your readers up with a few good posts, and then leaving them to forget about you for a few days or a week is only going to work against you. Keep your posts frequent and consistent.

5. Writing about more than one topic per post
Try to keep each post focused on one topic. It will help your readers find the content they want to read, it will make you look more organized, and it will make each topic seem more valuable than if they were all jumbled into one post.

If you do need to talk about a couple of different topics in the occasional post, make sure you gave it a title that is relevant to all of the topics, or that indicates you are rambling about a few things so readers know there is more topics as the get further into the post.

6. Ignoring your comments
I will be the first to admit I am very guilty of this one, however am working towards changing that. It first it didn’t even occur to me, but behind every comment is a real living commenter! If someone takes the time to write a comment on your blog, the least you could to is acknowledge and respond to it. I suppose it depends on the number of comments you get on a post, but if you can at least weigh in every once and a while and thank readers, reply to any questions they may have, or comment back regarding their comment, it will open up communication and encourage people to come back and keep commenting!

7. Getting too personal
This one depends on your audience really. If you are writing for your family and close friends, then I am sure they are thrilled to hear about your trip to the grocery store and experiences cleaning the toilet. However, if you are writing a blog in hopes of growing your readership, do not get too personal. While it’s important to put a personal spin on things, and voice your opinions, try to keep the content about interesting subjects that readers will want to read about.

There is a difference between writing about your personal daily life, and writing your personal thoughts and opinions on subjects that will appeal to a variety of people.

Also remember, I know this sounds so obvious but - what you write is out there on the web and anyone can read it! Five years down the road your forgotten blog could be searched by a possible employer.

8. Trying to Design and Style your blog yourself when you are not a Web Designer
There are so many easy to use, easy to read, easy to navigate, and beautiful templates available out there, it’s really not necessary to try to build your own. Many of the free templates available are designed by professionals who are expert in design and usability, so why not use that to your advantage! Getting into the dos and don’ts of blog design is a whole other post, for a whole other day, but please just trust me when I say, leave it to the professionals.

9. Just repeating other people’s content
Sure, occasionally I see something on another blog and it really catches my eye and I want to share it with my readers so I will post a short entry directing people to check it out over on the other blogger’s blog, but if you aren’t writing unique content, that people can’t find just anywhere, then there is no incentive for readers to stay at your blog. If you are just writing what everyone else is writing about, you won’t stand out!

As well, people want to here your opinion or view on something, not someone else’s. And don’t be scared to go against the grain. If you feel strongly about something, don’t feel like you have to follow along with everyone else’s point of view.

Outright stealing Blog Content is be an absolute No-No!

10. Posting huge blocks of text
Writing huge long paragraphs with no sub-headlines, or images to break it up overwhelms your readers and deters them from actually reading your blog post. People come to your blog wanting to read it much like you would read a magazine, skimming headlines and images and reading the paragraphs that correspond to the headlines and images that most catch their eye. If you blog resembles a novel, people aren’t going to stick around.

11. Giving up too soon
So it’s been a couple months. You still aren’t sure if many people are really reading your blog. It feels like you are putting in so much effort and time, and seeing little return. Don’t Give Up!!!
From all of the research I have done on blogs, it seems it can take 6 months to a year of consistent, quality blogging for things to take off. Depending on your niche and your goals, it could take even longer.

Surley Cat, oh Suuuurley Cat...

Thursday, October 9, 2008

The other day I got an email from Mary Lou at Time2Cre8 letting me know I was the winner of her blog giveaway! I loved this card set featuring her Surley Cats the moment I saw them, so I was thrilled that I had won them, and even more excited now that they have arrived! My boyfriend and I are always sending each other links to LOLcats, and I love that Mary Lou has been so creative in creating her own artistic version.

First I want to show you the envelope though. For some reason, receiving this envelope with all of the cool stamps on it was a really fun thing for me! Yes, perhaps it doesn't take much to excite me, but take a look for yourself!

Then I opened the package and found the 6 awesome cards, and a nice little thank you note from Mary Lou, including a personal message and her business card. It was a really nice way of packaging up the cards!

And finally I opened up all of the cards and fell in love all over again. Really cute, well made, great quality, and they make me laugh! I love these cards so much I don't want to give them away! I think I will have to find a fun way to display them at least for a while!

Oh and Princess Seven liked them too!

So if you are looking for some fun art, creative cards, tags, jewelry...the list goes on... please go visit Mary Lou's shop, Time2Cre8! Thank you Mary Lou!

Nuit Blanche Toronto

Monday, October 6, 2008

This past Saturday night, the city of Toronto was alive with art from 7pm to 7am. Nuit Blanche (White Night) is an all night celebration of contemporary art, taking over nearly the entire city of Toronto, with art exhibits, installations, and more in both the expected, and the most unexpected of places. From an office-style drop ceiling complete with florescent lights installed in a back alley off of one of Toronto's busiest areas, to a pack of brain-eating zombies roaming through a park, you were never quite sure what you were going to run into around each corner.

Originating in Paris, this is the third year Nuit Blanche has taken place in Toronto, but my first year attending, and I was not disappointed. I have heard really mixed reviews on Nuit Blanche from previous years, but I was pleasantly surprised! Not only was there some really interesting art to take in, one of the best parts was watching the audience's ways of reacting and interacting with the art.

This year's event showcased the work of over 750 artists and curators, in 92 galleries, museums, cultural and educational institutions and neighborhoods, and news sources are reporting over a million people were in attendance. I was really excited that I was able to get some great photos of a few of the installations so here they are along with a little bit about each piece of art:

Stereoscope, 2008
Project Blinkenlights - Berlin, Germany
Tim Pritlove - Berlin, Germany

Thomas Fiedler - Berlin, Germany

This one was my favourite, as well as the favourite of many people I talked to. An interactive light installation at Toronto's City Hall, the two windowed sides of the two towers and transformed into huge display screens, each of the 960 windows acting as a pixel. The display varied from showing graphic animations, including people, running horses, and the coolest of all, pong, tetris, and space invaders. The public can influence "Stereoscope" through a variety of interfaces including smartphones, the web and physical controllers located at the base of City Hall. Here you can see someone has just scored in a game of pong:

And game over: Into The Blue 2008
Fujiwara Takahiro - Tokyo, Japan

This sculpture was hanging from the ceiling of the Eaton Center. It's a huge, transparent, blue, inflated cone, that really reminded me of those coloured, stackable rings we all had as kids. It was pretty cool looking, and this was definitely one of the installations where it was interesting to see how people reacted. I mean, it's not every day you get to go into the Eaton Center, after hours when all the stores are closed and elbow your way through a crowd of people to stand underneath a big spinning inflatable stack of blue donuts! From far away the floating bubble-mid played with the light and colour.

And from close up, directly underneath, the spinning orb had an almost hypnotizing effect!

Zombies in Condoland, 2008

Jillian McDonald - New York, USA

Situated in a park in downtown Toronto, Zombies in Condoland was really just that; a bunch of zombies roaming around, I suppose looking for some brains to feed on. The intention was to create the feeling of a low-budget horror film, and I believe at times they were even actually filming for a film.

Earth and Sky, 2008
Shuvinai Ashoona - Cape Dorset, Canada
John Noestheden - Pilot Butte, Canada

Basically this piece was a collaborative effort by the 2 artists. One's strength lies in earth and the other in sky, and together they built this lovely blown up piece of art. One's tool of choice was fine-tipped pens, and the other's was the photocopier. There is a deeper meaning behind this piece, involving a lot of interests, memories, learning and experiences, but to be honest, I didn't really get all of that, I just thought it looked cool, and I was fine with that!

Euronight '08
This next Image is from an installation which was part of a group exhibit called Euronight'08. It used elastic, the kind you would use when sewing, and wrapped it around trees and entangled it in itself, creating a giant spiderweb like area where people could climb around. We had a lot of fun climbing around, trying not to trip, and snapping each other with giant elastics!

Sitting Ducks

Ryerson University

The pond at Ryerson University was over taken with rubber ducks for the night, creating a mysterious and enchanting work of art called "Sitting Ducks."
On a side note, I am very pleased to announce that this image was chosen to be displayed on the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation) website, as part of a gallery of select user photos.

So there you have it, and really that's just the tip of the iceberg! I took so many photos, these are just a few of my favourites, and there was simply so much to see and do, it was impossible to see it all. See you next year at Nuit Blanche!
