Recently I met a really nice woman in the cyber world named Cherie Livingston. Cherie runs a shop called Purple Triangle on Etsy. Here she sells original, one of a kind stained glass creations, that are really quite beautiful. What really jumped out at me about Purple Triangle though, was that 100% of the proceeds from many of her items benefit McMains Children's Developmental Center, a non-profit therapy center which treats children with cerebral palsy, developmental delays, and learning disabilities.
"Wow," I thought, "what a wonderful way to give back through your art." In talking further with Cherie, I learned about a whole group of dedicated artisans who feel the need to give back to their communities. This group is called Etsy for Charity (EFC).
Charity of the Month
Etsy for Charity (EFC) brings together artisans who want to give to charity through their art a few ways. As a member, you can choose to give to the charity of your choice, or you can choose to donate to the group's selected charity of the month. Alternatively, you can choose to donate items to the EFC shop where 100% of the proceeds after the fees go to that charity of the month.
Monthly Challenges
Each month a different challenge is posted up on the EFC Monthly Challenge Blog, to inspire and motivate the members of EFC. The entries into the challenge get put into the EFC shop, are voted on, and the winner either gets to pick from the prize bucket (gifts and offers EFC members put into the bucket) OR get a "seller of the week" post in the blog. Sounds like a great source of inspiration to me, an a lot of fun too, participating with the other members!
How Do I Sign Up?
You can join the EFC ning site:
http://etsyforcharity.ning.com/
115 members strong, and counting, the EFC group is making a wonderful difference in the lives of so many people. Please check them out and next time you are looking to make a purchase, view the Etsy for Charity shop and not only get a great, unique, handmade item, but know that your purchase has also gone on to make an impact in someone's life.

It's a Photography Contest!
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
I am very excited to announce that I am running a photography contest right here on my blog! The winner will get to choose 1 camera strap out of 5 selected from my etsy shop!
To enter the contest, email me 1 photograph to tanybug [at] gmail.com. Photographs should be based on the theme "Summer's Here!" The interpretation of that is up to you!
Photos must be taken by you, and no body else, and you must have full rights to the photo. It is encouraged to take the photos after reading this blog, but not necessary. Each photo submitted will be displayed here on my blog. Please include your name in the email if you would like photo credit. (Depending on number of entries received I may have to upload the photos to a third source such as flickr and link there.)
This contest will run starting today, June 25th, and entries will be accepted for 3 weeks, until July 16th, 11:59pm EST.
Entries will be judged by me, and the winner will be announced on or before Saturday July 19th. Winner will be notified by email at the email address used to submit photo.
Winner has their choice of 1 camera strap from the 5 shown below free of charge, plus free shipping.

Happy Photographing!
EDIT: I had some people asking of photos could be digitally enhanced or edited. While the idea was a photography contest, I say go ahead and get creative with your photography. I don't want people to feel stifled by a bunch of rules, I want people to feel inspired by the theme and let their creative juices flow! Just keep in mind, it is a photography contest, not a digital art contest.

New Camera Straps!
Monday, June 23, 2008
I've added 2 new straps that I am very excited about to my collection!
The first is a Breast Cancer Awareness Strap. I think we have all been touched by breast cancer in some way and need to be aware and dedicated to finding a cure. $3 from each of these straps sold will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
The second addition to my collection is this fun and funky polka dot pattern! This one has turned out to be one of my absolute favourites! It's so simple, but so pretty.
Click on the images above or visit my store for more information!

Sunday Morning Sunshine
Sunday, June 22, 2008
I've been away for a couple of days; I was doing an overnight charity walk, the Relay for Life, in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. It was a wonderfully moving experience and I am thrilled to have raised $500 to help find a cure.
So now that my body has recovered from walking all night, and my sleeping patterns are nearly back to normal, I thought I would share with you some Sunday morning sunshine! It's a little overcast outside my window, so I thought I would browse Etsy for some sunshine!

Writing Your Blog with Search Engine Optimization in mind!
Thursday, June 19, 2008
Many people start their blogs as a way to market either themselves, their company, or their product. It's a great idea, especially for us crafters, artists, and artisans. It opens up communication between buyers, sellers, friends, potential customers, and Aunt Mary. Often though we ask ourselves, "how do we get more people than mom and Aunt Mary reading my blog?"
There is of course the usual channels, such as commenting on other blogs, emailing out your blog link to your contacts, posting your blog link in related forums, etc. An these are all great, but how do we get our blog to show up when someone searches a relevant topic in Google? Well unfortunately there is no magic quick fix. It takes time, and effort. There are many professionals out there who work full-time jobs dedicated to doing just this, getting your site ranking high on Google, so please understand that there is no quick-fix, especially in such popular categories as craft blogs.
However, there are many thing you can do to help get your rankings higher, and help get your blog seen more through natural search. But first, lets start with the basics!
What is Search Engine Optimization!?
As defined on wikipedia:
Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. So basically what this means is bringing more traffic to your site through natural searches (ie. when someone searches a keyword in google, and lands on your blog!) The more times you get hits (people landing on your site) from searches of particular keywords, the higher you will rank in Google (your blog appears higher in the searches) when those words are searched.
So How do I get Myself to "Rank" Higher?
Here is the meat and potatoes you've all been waiting for!
1. Research your keywords. Before, or as you are writing an article or post, do a little research on relevant keywords. The goal is to find the best keyword phrases for a given topic. I suggest using Google Keyword Suggest. Here you can enter a keyword (ie. crafts) and the tool will return a long list of relevant keywords. Look for keywords that have LOW advertiser competition, and high Average Search Volume, then use these words through out your article and in titles and such. Low advertiser competition means there are less other people using this word as a keyword, and high average search volume, means lots of people are actually searching this keyword or phrase. This will increase your chances of ranking higher in searches for these less competitive, but highly searched terms.
2. The Title Tag. Depending on what tool you use to build your blog, you may have lots or little control over this. The title tag is the title of the page, as seen at the top of the Browser. If you can alter your title tag, do so! This is the single most important element on the page for search engine optimization. When writing your title tag, keep the following in mind:
- What would someone type into Google when searching for a blog like mine?
- Put your most important keywords first!
- Keep it short, tight, and direct. Don't include many fluff words here. 10-12 words MAX
- Does your title Tag tell what your blog is about, even if someone came across it out of context.
- Capitalize the First Letter of each word.
- Do not use puns or word plays here.
- Try to differentiate from your competitors title tags.
4. Headlines and Sub- Heads throughout your text. Headlines and sub-heads not only help break up your text and make articles more legible to readers, they also help with search engine optimization. Headlines should not match your title tag exactly, but again should use main Keywords. Keep it Literal and Straight forward. Use Sub-Headings through out your text to create a more editorial title. Breaking up your text, and organizing it well signals to Search Engines that the content is comprehensive and well organized. For an example of a really well organized and comprehensive page, check out Wikipedia. Some people say Wikipedia pages are the perfect example of a well structured page for search engine optimization.
5. Descriptions or "Alt" tags for all images! You know when you add an image to your blog and your blogging tool asks you for a description of the image, or sometimes what it calls an "alt" tag? Well this is actually very important. Search Engines like Google can't read images, but it can read descriptions that you add to images. Again, try to use keywords here, but keep it short, (4-5 words max) and direct.
6. Linking. Throughout your article, include links to other sites' relevant articles. Usually you would want to keep this to non- competitors' sites, although in the craft world, we are all friends, so this is not such a big deal. However, try to keep your links to relevant links, not near-identical articles. As well, if you yourself have previously posted a relevant article, link it within your own site. The more links really the better, and the more authoritative the link, the better (ie. government agencies, non-profits, educational institutions, leaders in the relevant industry). You can see many examples of words I have linked throughout this article. Anytime you are talking about something that could be of interest to people for more info, link the word to the relevant site. As well, at the end of your article, you could include a few links to relevant and related articles. you see sites like about.com doing this all the time.
7. Send your blog post to people you might not usually think of. You've just finished writing an informative article, well structured, lots of authoritative links, etc., now what do you do with it? Think of a site that might be interested in it, and email them and let them know about the article you have just written. In fact, think of at least 3 sites who are non-competitors, but might be interested in reading your article. The worst that can happen is they ignore you, the best that can happen is a big blog, or industry site links back to your blog, and sends their traffic, to your site!
I hope this helps you get started on priming your blog for search engine optimization. This is really just a starting point, but in time, implementing these tips will go a long way in helping your rankings. I know it's a lot to take in, and may seem overwhelming at first, but try implementing just a couple of these tips each week, every little bit helps!
I hope you find this article informative and easy to understand and follow, but if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to leave a comment, for email me any questions at tanybug [at] gmail.com.

Artist Trading Cards - What's it all about?
Monday, June 16, 2008
I've been hearing a lot about Artist Trading Cards (ATC) and I am thinking its time to jump in and join the fun! First though, I had to figure out what they are all about, and what the heck you do with them! So I thought I would share what I found with you.
So What is an Artist Trading Card?
Well, its a card, specifically a 2.5" x 3.5" (no bigger, no smaller) art miniature. The idea is to trade these cards with other artists and collect them, just like you did back in the day with your hockey or baseball cards, or Yu-gi-oh cards, depending on your age.
The first rule of Artist Trading Cards is, you must not talk about Artist Trading cards. Just kidding, sorry I love Fight Club ;) But in all seriousness, size seems to be the only real rule, however there are a few conventions that are expected.
I believe the most important convention of ATCs is they are not to be sold. The whole essence of an ATC is that it allows artists to meet other artists and exchange a small piece of themselves and their passion. As always, there is an exception to this, when artisits make what's called 'editions'. (more info on editions below)
Second convention is that on the back of a ATC, the artist writes thier name, contact information, title of the ATC and the edition number (see below for info on editions).
Finally, it's usually expected that an ATC is an original piece of work, not a reproduction. The exception to this, is when an artist has produced a limited edition set or reproductions, calls "editions".
Beyond the above mentioned rules/conventions, the ATC is a pretty open and free medium!
What kind of art should go on my ATC?
Anything you want! That's the beauty! I have seen trading ATCs with illustrations, paintings, paper piecing, photography, digital art, collage, rubbings, stamps, foil, beads, ink... the possibilities are endless really. However, it does make sense to stay inline with your style of art, and what type of art you are promoting, but don;t be scared to experiment! It's only a small piece of cardstock really, if you mess up, start again!
Explain Editions or ACEO (art card editions and originals)
ACEOs came about when some artists decided to reproduce limited editions of some of their cards to sell. ATC enthusiasts seem rather split on this concept. Some feel it's great, and no harm, while others think it goes against the essence of ATCs and s nothing but a cash grab. I myself have no problem really with people doing it, but I probably wouldn't ever buy one. It kind of takes the fun out for me.
Here are some great examples of ATCs I found on Flickr! If you have ATCs, feel free to send me a photo of it and I will add it to these examples! Send your image and link to tanybug [at] gmail.com.

**In addition: shortly after posting this, I found this really neat seller on etsy (smile4katie) who makes custome mats for displaying ATCs! It's brilliant really, and so I wanted to share this too. She has lots of options for display but this is one of my favourites:

dis morning's damask
Saturday, June 14, 2008
I love damask patterns, and I think most everyone else does too. Originally a word meaning a fabric with a specific type of weaving, today you see damask patterns everywhere, from clothing, to invitations, to jewelry, to handbags, and everything in between.
I've pulled a few of my favourite Damask inspired pieces from Etsy to share with you:

7 ways to find your inspiration
Thursday, June 12, 2008
Inspiration is all around us, we see it every day, whether its on a computer screen, at a mall, on the street, in a magazine, or a million other places. Why is it then, that we as artists are often faced with that creative block? It's inevitable though, the more pressure we put on ourselves to create, the harder it is to get those creative juices flowing.
No matter how much you love designing or creating, there will always be a day when you just get stuck! So, I've compiled a list of some of my favourite ways of gaining inspiration.
1. Browse through magazines. Pick up a couple of magazines, and not just your usual craft magazines, pick up something different. If you are a painter, pick up a photography magazine, if you are a photographer pick up a graphic design magazine, if you are a graphic designer, pick up a paper crafts magazine... you get the idea. Looking at beautiful work slightly outside of expertise can help get your brain going and you can start to look at things in a different way. The bonus to magazines of any kind really is to look at the ads. Many people skip right by the ads, or just look at the product shot, but take some time to look at headlines, lighting, colour combinations, etc. There are a lot of clever ads out there, which can really spark something inside of you!
2. Read Blogs. This seems like a no-brainer, but I am often surprised by how many people don't use blogs for inspiration. Have you every googled "inspiration blogs"? Sure it's great to read your craft blogs and usual suspects, but when stuck for inspiration, try something new!
3. Listen to music. This one is fairly self explanatory, but some of my favourite music can really clear my head and turn my mood around in an instant!
4. Go for a walk! Bring your camera along (actually bring your camera every where you go!) and take pictures of interesting colour combinations, funny signs, beautiful flowers. Some of the most beautiful and inspiring settings exists right outside our front doors!
5. Go to the Art Store. One of my favourite things to do, especially when i need ideas, is to just go walk around the biggest art store I can find. Being faced with every possible supply available just gets my brain going and I can start to piece things together and come up with a new project. Many art stores also have completed projects or paintings on display, which just adds to the inspiration train.
6. Flickr. When in doubt just start clicking. Jump from picture to picture, from person to person and you are bound to find some inspiration!
7. Challenge yourself. A couple of months ago I took Rhonna Farrer's 21 day inspiration challenge. The challenge was really about challenging your self to do something every day, for 21 days. I decided to take a photo every day for 21 days, and then I put it in a art journal where I also did a lot of painting and doodling for each day. It didn;t matter if I had nothing spectacular to take a picture of some days, the point was to just do it! It was a lot of fun, but it's never too late to start your own challenge!
